Aracena and Rio Tinto Tour

In the last century Spanish women in small villages in the Sierra de Huelva mountains used to meet every day at the “Lavadero”, a communal purpose-built fountain in the village square, to wash their clothes. Today this custom still continues, more for the social benefit it brings, and if you are lucky you will see them in action! We visit a stunning village which is worth the visit in any case, but if you are lucky the lavadero will top it all! The tour also takes us to the Ham museum in Aracena, home to some of the best “Jamon Iberico” in the world; to an incredible cave system where the biggest cave is the size of Westminster cathedral in the UK, and then we break for lunch with the opportunity to try the local produce. In the afternoon we head by coach to RioTinto, the small mining town where the British used to mine copper and where the mining giant Rio Tinto Zinc originated. We visit the mine museum which has a luxury train carriage built for Queen Victoria’s visit, and a house where the British management used to live, perfectly preserved. It is a place steeped in English history that most people know very little about, the home of the first football club in Spain, started by the British!
